Public Transport Improvements

Creating opportunities through safer, greener, and healthier travel

The Levelling Up East Lancashire programme includes projects to deliver a range public transport improvements which aim to make public transport faster and more reliable.

The projects will improve journeys and everyday life for people in East Lancashire and across the rest of the county by making it easier to access work, education, shops, services and green spaces.

The Public Transport Improvements project includes plans to:

  • Provide real time passenger information to help plan journeys and stay informed.
  • Upgraded traffic signal technology to improve bus journey times.
  • Accessibility improvements at bus stops, making it easier to get on and off and improving journey times and reliability.

Real time information for passengers

Accurate, live information about the arrival of services will be provided through the installation of display screens at more than 100 bus stops across East Lancashire.

The information about bus services will be displayed in real time on the screens, including estimated time of arrival and departure of services, as well as details of delays.  Information will also be provided through ‘talking bus stops’ with audio announcements at bus stops.

Upgraded traffic signal technology

New traffic signal technology will be installed at multiple locations across East Lancashire. This technology will help to speed up bus journeys by prioritising the movement of buses ay key junctions along the bus route at certain times. These changes will improve bus journeys, making services more reliable and reducing delays. The signal technology upgrades provide a cost effective solution and alternative to physical measures such as bus lanes.

Bus stop accessibility improvements

Improvements will be made to around 180 bus stops across East Lancashire to make them more accessible. This will include adjustments to kerb heights on pavements making it easier to get on and off buses for everyone including people with pushchairs, wheelchairs or mobility scooters. The improvements will also provide signs with clear timings and better road markings to discourage cars from parking or blocking access to bus stops.
