Nelson, Pendle - Safer, Greener, Healthier Streets project

Overview

Nelson, Pendle

This project includes various improvements to local streets at Nelson Walverden Primary School and Marsden Community Primary School, and in Netherfield Road by Duerden Street and Broad Street by Hibson Road at the bus station (Nelson Interchange).

The works will involve making streets around the respective schools one way, providing new wider pavements, and introducing walking safety improvement measures, including raising the road to meet the kerb level (raised tables), tactile paving, and road narrowing points with raised tables and tactiles in the one-way streets. These measures will help improve overall road safety, prioritise pedestrians, reduce speeds and manage traffic flows. A new signal crossing will be provided in Netherfield Road by Duerden Street to help people cross Netherfield Road safely and get to the town centre.

To further assist connectivity to the town centre, a new zebra crossing will be provided at Broad Street by the Station Hotel. Additionally, new lighting will be installed in the underpass, as well as new features to improve safety in the area. Sheltered seating will be introduced at the taxi rank, as well as secure cycle storage by the bus station.

Tree and shrub planting will be undertaken at selected areas in the streets where the pavement has been widened to improve greenery and the street scene. Additional tree and shrub planting will also be provided at the existing green space between Railway Street and Brunswick Street to enhance the space and make it more attractive for people to spend time there.

The green space to the south / in front of Nelson Walverden Primary school will be redesigned so that people can enjoy the green open area, with a new pavement, tree and wildflower planting, and new seating. Work is currently underway with Planning Authorities to ensure that the proposals are in accordance with local planning regulations, enabling implementation of the redesign.

The streets by Nelson Walverden Primary School that will be made one way, working in a clockwise direction around the school, are Holly Street, Athol Street, Temple Street, and Bracewell Street.

The streets by Marsden Community Primary School that will be made one way, working in a clockwise direction around the school, are Percy Street and Ripon Street, starting from Hibson Street, Bradshaw Street (southbound between Ripon Street and Beaufort Street and northbound from Ripon Street to Princess Street), and Bentley Street. Hartley Street will also be made one way to help improve safety for parents and children walking to school and manage traffic flows.
