Nelson, Pendle - Safer, Greener, Healthier Streets project

Overview

Nelson, Pendle

This project includes various improvements to local streets at Nelson Walverden Primary School and Marsden Community Primary School, and in Netherfield Road by Duerden Street

The works will involve making streets around the respective schools one way, providing new wider pavements, and introducing walking safety improvement measures, including raising the road to meet the kerb level (raised tables), tactile paving, and road narrowing points with raised tables and tactiles in the one-way streets. These measures will help improve overall road safety, prioritise pedestrians, reduce speeds and manage traffic flows. A new signal crossing will be provided in Netherfield Road by Duerden Street to help people cross Netherfield Road safely and get to the town centre.

To further assist connectivity to the town centre, the zebra crossing will be moved to meet desire lines provided at Broad Street by the Station Hotel.

Tree and shrub planting will be undertaken at selected areas in the streets where the pavement has been widened to improve greenery and the street scene. Additional tree and shrub planting will also be provided at the existing green space between Railway Street and Brunswick Street to enhance the space and make it more attractive for people to spend time there.

The green space to the south / in front of Nelson Walverden Primary school will be redesigned so that people can enjoy the green open area, with a new pavement and new seating.

The streets by Nelson Walverden Primary School will be altered to improve safety. Following on from feedback from local residents we have changed the final plan reversing the direction of one-way traffic on Holly Street. We will keep Athol Street and Temple Street two way and improve the existing raised table at the Athol Street / Temple Street junction. Bracewell Street will be made one way to improve safety at the the school entrance.

Also after feedback with local residents we have decided to reverse the routing of the proposed one-way system around Marsden Community Primary School. However, to align to our LUF objectives to improve safety in these areas and in line with our original proposals we will retain Bradshaw as one way southbound from Percy Street to Beaufort Street to manage and calm traffic flows. The proposals for raised tables in Percy Street, Ripon Street and Bentley Street have also been removed in line with stakeholder feedback. The existing road hump on Bentley Street is retained.
